What Thiebaud especially loves, however, more than food or the memory of food--and perhaps even more than people, at least from the pictorial point of view--is craft. He is a terrific craftsman. Whatever he asks paint to do, it will (almost invariably) do, and come up smiling and looking effortless after it's done. With a very few exceptions, every picture in this show displays a sort of seraphic ease with itself, an unfussed wholeness. The surface is dense, creamy and unctuous, yet it never looks dragged or displays the laborious appearance of palette-knife work...
...Clearly a labor of love, the book is carefully structured, with Southern's serious thoughts on literature, cinema, and drugs bracketing his work as a short-story craftsman, a critic, a New Journalist, and a writer of blissfully puerile "letters." ...Aaron Spelling has taught the world anything, it's that a story doesn't need redeeming social value to keep us riveted by the details. Plot is key; so are passion and powerful people behaving their worst when the stakes matter the most. As a craftsman, Spelling would no doubt appreciate the tortuous tale of Susan Chrzanowski, a Michigan judge and divorce who, over the course of a year, journeyed from pillar of the community to key witness at her married lover's murder trial and then to focal point of public rancor over the deceit and misconduct produced...
