When Sculptor Frederick William MacMonnies was commissioned (in the will of Mrs. Angelina Crane) to fashion a statue of Civic Virtue for Manhattan's City Hall Park, he modeled an upright youth spurning two coiled mermaids who represented Deceit and Disillusion.
