...Montreal or Los Angeles cooped up in a row of hot seats given little to watch but an occasional dash or 10,000 meter walking race. Kahn's solution to all this highly sanctioned monotony is to keep an alert eye which is ready to wade through the crap and focus on the human quirks and foibles pervading the Games. In a piece on the 1984 Summer Games in L.A., for example, he directs our attention to an Olympic cookbook and team handball player Mary Phyl's favorite recipe...

Clinton's overarching problem is "how much crap can he take," says the Governor's New Hampshire campaign director, Mitchell Schwartz. At the Wichita Eagle, editor Merritt decided in 1990 to change coverage to compel gubernatorial candidates to speak to the issues and "get off the crap sound- bite kind of campaigns." The paper polled a thousand readers and nonreaders before and after the campaign and concluded that readers had greatly enhanced understanding of issues while nonreaders did not. Says Merritt: "We are convinced that the appetite is out there for the kind of journalism all of us would like to do on campaigns. If a candidate is running around...
