...sharing their Internet access, and while fon.com's searchable maps help you pinpoint every FON-friendly hotspot in the world, there are many areas where service is thin on the ground. Still, for the cost of an ordinary wi-fi router, it's like getting a wireless couch to crash on in dozens of major cities...
...there was one surprise at last night's Saggies (or whatever they're called - actually, the Actor, and blechh to that uninspired nickname). It was that the indie comedy Little Miss Sunshine won the Best Ensemble award, beating Babel, Bobby, The Departed and Dreamgirls. Because Crash burst out off the pack last year with a SAG win in the same category, and upset Brokeback Mountain to take the Oscar for Best Picture, Sunshine's victory has to spur it at least the realm of Serious Speculation...
...There's no question that last year's surprise SAG ensemble award to Crash propelled it to the forefront of the Academy membership's consciousness. The prize for Sunshine will make some voters think, perhaps for the first time, "Hey, why not?" But the SAG award is no reliable predictor of Oscar success. UNITED 93 One of the few films to deal with the war on terrorism at its first flash point, this fine 9/11 docudrama merited a slot. BEST DIRECTOR CLINT EASTWOOD...
...thought all along was that Babel's toughest fight, like Crash's last year, would be to get nominated. Now that it has made the final five, it stands a decent chance of winning. So, even though former muscle-man Arnold Schwarzenegger pronounced it " Bar-bell" at last week's Golden Globes, the movie is now a smart-money long shot for the top prize. It could be the first time the Best Picture award went to a film that is mostly not in English, except for Rocky...
