...retro-rock productions are so crass. A quieter new musical hit in London is an engaging little show called Taboo, which recaps the rise and drug-addled fall of Boy George, the androgynous former lead singer of the band Culture Club. The surprise is that, aside from three old favorites (with Karma Chameleon as the obligatory curtain-call rouser), the show has a new score, written by (former Boy) George O'Dowd himself. Helped by Christopher Renshaw's cabaret-style production and a dead-on performance as George by Euan Morton, O'Dowd's supple melodies and touching but tough...

...sport's regulations, relating to the podium presentation. Hearing the crowd's reaction, Schumacher had pushed Barrichello up to the top step, embarrassing Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, who didn't know who should get the first-place trophy. What Ferrari should have been penalized for was the crass and cynical application of team orders. While the FIA "deplored the manner" of Schumacher's win, it concluded "with reluctance" that it could take no action since the drivers were "contractually bound to execute orders given to them by the team." Since Ferrari is way out in front in both...

...Wrongs, he fuses reggae, folk and R. and B. into a sound all his own. The songs have hooks, but they lie back, content to let the lyrics and complex composition shine. The rest of the time he jumps between faux radio skits and crass, attention-seeking covers. Wyclef thinks anything he touches is interesting, but some things, like his hideous update of December, 1963 (Oh What a Night), are best left in shrink wrap. --By Josh Tyrangiel

...crew from Bowling Green, Ky., is the latest to make being from the South not just a fact in its bio but an agenda. To be fair, its major-label debut, Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz (last week's biggest gainer on the Billboard Top 200 chart), shows none of the crass preoccupation with pimping and cash that dominates rap from the coasts. On the laid-back Po' Folks, the guys rhyme through thick drawls, "All my life been po'/But it really don't matter no mo'/And they wonder why we act this way/Nappy Roots gonna be O.K." The message...

...life, is just silly. Many American colleges happily acknowledge that once applicants reach a certain threshold of academic ability, they blend many attributes to obtain a class: geographic and racial variety, athletic and artistic ability, whether Mom or Dad is an alum. That last criterion is not so crass as accepting a parent's proffered check, but the difference is only of degree, not kind. In 20 years or 50, loyalty is expected to breed generosity. Usually it does. Like stealing bread and sleeping under bridges, Rev. Platt's error - linking the quid too closely...
