...war’s merits, leaving critics who dwell on his credibility looking desperate while sharks hungry for domestic regime change would be left only to change the subject. They held their tongues before invasion, and a quixotic stand now would seem worse than cowardly. It would seem crass and opportunistic, political sins for which Bush, if his patriotic armor is to crack, must be left to repent alone...

...Makeover, the only one of ABC's late-season blitz of reality shows to make fall's prime-time schedule, has petitioners beg, Queen for a Day style, to win packages of plastic surgery, cosmetic dentistry and sundry other injections and deletions. It's not surprising that Extreme is crass, but it is also maudlin. (As is TLC's plastic-surgery show, A Personal Story. In its credits, words float across the screen: LIPOSUCTION ... SELF-ESTEEM ... BREAST AUGMENTATION ... DIGNITY ... RHINOPLASTY.) A stay-at-home mom on Extreme describes her surgery as a reward for years of self-sacrifice ("This...

...appeal to the advertisers, though, with its time-honored, if a touch crass, pitch that it has the richest viewers of any broadcast network. It's true. If NBC were a neighborhood, you couldn't afford to live there. Its most platinum-plated drama, "The West Wing," has an average viewer household income of over $75,000 - $10,000 higher than the second-richest show, "Ed," also on NBC. (A fact that probably kept the incessantly quirky bowling-alley drama on the air despite its middling ratings - while other shows with more viewers but fewer SUV buyers got canceled.) Zucker...
