...have caught our first glimpses of the ammonia clouds and great storm systems of Jupiter; the cold, salt-covered surface of the moon; and desolate crater-pocked, ancient and broiling Mercurian wasteland; and the wild and eerie landscape of our nearest planetary neighbor, Venus...
...Just 49 years after high-living Judge Joseph Force Crater was last seen stepping into a cab in Manhattan, somebody phoned New York City police that the missing man, declared legally dead in 1939, could be found having a drink at Pat's Emerald Pub in Queens. The breathless tip proved phony, of course, as do all 300 or so reports on Crater's whereabouts that the police receive each year...
...noisier sendoff. Last week General Alexander Meigs Haig Jr., 54, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe, narrowly escaped death from an unidentified terrorist's bomb as he motored to NATO military headquarters in Casteau, Belgium. The blast missed Haig's Mercedes 600 limousine but blew a crater in the road, slightly injured three of his security guards and damaged their car. ...coconut palms or fern forests, no hibiscus, begonia, bougainvillaea, poinsettia, u'ulei, mamane or hinahina blossoms, it would be worth visiting for Haleakala alone. It is among the world's largest dormant volcanoes-it has not erupted since 1790-and its brooding presence dominates Maui. The crater of 10,000-ft.-high Haleakala (pronounced Hah-lee-ah-kah-lah) is seven miles long, two miles across and half a mile deep. While it has almost no vegetation save for patches of glistening silversword, the crater is dotted with rose-tipped cinder cones, evidence of minor eruptions over...
...picture above shows the planet's great northern volcano, Olympus Mons, the largest known to man. Its multiringed crater measures some 50 miles across and towers 15 miles above a base that stretches for some 375 miles, roughly the distance between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The volcano was observed from a height of 5,000 miles on a Martian morning in midsummer. The clouds rimming the volcano are seasonal, limited to spring and summer; scientists postulate that they may be formed when ice condenses from the atmosphere as it cools while moving up the crater's flanks...
