...from rising semimolten rock. A huge hunk of the mountain rumbled downhill like a great sliding door, uncovering rock saturated with compressed gases. Exposed to the air, the gases exploded. Geologists are encouraged by the fact that the lava dome that has been forming in Mount St. Helens' crater now appears to be stable, capable of serving as a cork for the mountain's bottled-up gases and the lava that is still rising. But no one will say that Mount St. Helens is ready to settle down. The mountain, says one of her geological suitors...

Other moons examined by Voyager 1 were far less shy in revealing themselves. Tiny Mimas is dominated on one side by a large crater that stares out like the ominous billboard eye in The Great Gatsby. Had the object that caused the crater been much larger, its impact might have shattered Mimas. Its other side is heavily pockmarked with small craters, indicating that it is a relatively old celestial body. Yet Mimas' companion Enceladus displays a less dramatic topography. Scientists speculate that some mysterious heat source, perhaps created by gravitational stresses, has softened its icy surface and smoothed...

...some 1,700 of them, are mothers and babies, parents and grandparents, families of three and four who scurry out of cars, Minoltas in hand, eager to record for posterity the "place where it all began." What they see is nothing much. The original 400-yd., 25-ft.-deep crater has long since been filled in to prevent further radiation. The "pearls of Trinity" - ceramic-like green glass, or Trinitite, formed from the sand by the enormous blast of heat - have been mostly buried or stolen by souvenir hunters. A few relics remain, though, sparkling in the pale...

...slight but growing deformation similar-but on a much smaller scale-to the bulge on the peak's north face before the May explosion. Scientists were not sure if it was caused by a swelling on the rim or the settling of material on the floor of the crater. Inside the crater a lava dome has been forming. It glows red as molten rock roils underneath its hardened crust. The questions: Will it be able to cap the volcano? Or will pent-up gases blast through again...

...scene of the colossal blast, which tore a 4-ft. crater in the main waiting room and destroyed one entire side of the station, Bologna's mourners created their own folk shrine to the dead. Bouquets of carnations and gladioli were tossed, some with photographs of victims attached. Lines of young travelers with rucksacks paused thoughtfully on the way to their trains. By week's end vases of flowers could be seen among the plastic-covered bouquets stacked at the scene of the explosion, thus giving an air of permanence to the site. Occasionally a housewife would kneel...
