...three stories in the issue, the best is definitely Denis Fodor's "Herr Zipfl's Revolt," a tale of the Bemelmans type but infinitely less genial: Herr Zipfl is the Burgermeister of a Russian-controlled Austrian town. Behind a mask of craven geniality, he is rather resentful of the fact that the Russian military is more interested (justifiably, I think) in his dog, than in him. The plot, the ideas, and the characters of "Herr Zipfl's Revolt" emerge quite naturally and aimply from the relentless simplicity of Mr. Fodor's style...

...Hope pictures. Yet "Monsieur Beaucaire," though moving through the old familiar paces with the thoroughly-shredded plot of the Tarkington satire as a vague backdrop, manages, like most of its siblings, to be pretty funny. This is due, as usual, to Hope's exertions--here as a craven barber trying to fill a French Duke's shoes as swordsman, lover, and bridegroom...

Tying up this joyous philosophy in a neat bundle, the final curtain finds the innocent lovers, Mio and Miriamne, bulletriddled and lifeless, while the judge who sentenced the guiltless man to the chair, the real murderer, and a craven coward who shielded the killer, go their merry way, presumably troubled by nothing except their consciences...
...sneer: "Why aren't you in uniform?" when he's liable to be a discharged vet or someone like me, who volunteered and was rejected three times for hernia. Both remarks presuppose that men are free agents and aren't in combat only because they are craven, and that's more nonsense than your Miss Shepard ought to be allowed...
