...Olympic punk style by Hairdresser Vidal Sassoon, had been only vaguely concerned with the 1980 boycott because "I wasn't really into swimming then." Last year she won a gold at the Pan American Games. Now here she was, wearing out the water with her thrashing crawl. Then, on the other side, in Lane 5, Annemarie Verstappen of The Netherlands, a lanky and apparently boneless 19-year-old, pulled to the slightest of leads. But 25 meters from the finish, Hogshead caught Verstappen, and Steinseifer was catching Hogshead, chopping through a communal bow wave. The Dutch racer faltered...

...journalist who worked for an English-language newspaper in San Jose. Among the 28 injured was Pastora, who suffered first-and second-degree burns on his face and shrapnel wounds in his legs. Seriously hurt was Susan Morgan, a Newsweek stringer whose legs and arms were fractured. Some could crawl out of the building, but others lay moaning in the wreckage for nearly an hour before being pulled out. Two hours passed before a doctor and two nurses arrived...

Hawaii was pure holiday. Although the President carried his three-inch-thick briefing book as he padded to the beach in white bathing trunks Easter Monday, he mostly ignored it. Instead, he tried some broken-field running, using a coconut as a surrogate football, then exhibited a leisurely overhand crawl through the Pacific surf. The scene seemed reminiscent of the pictures from 1966 that purported to show Chairman Mao, then 72, swimming vigorously in the Yangtze River. During their day and two nights in the 50th state (they stop in the 49th, Alaska, this week), Reagan and Nancy chatted with...

...Hynde and Drummer Martin Chambers, have made a separate peace with the past by putting a stake in the future. Hynde has a 15-month-old baby; Chambers' wife is expecting her own in July. Not incidentally, the band also has a smashing new album called Learning to Crawl (No. 13 on the charts) that has no current rival for tough rock and straight talk. There is the present sellout U.S. concert tour from Honolulu to Radio City Music Hall, ending May 6 in Buffalo. And there are, apparently, quite a few lessons that have been learned...

Learning to Crawl fixes on birth, innocence and endurance as subjects for its ten anthems of independence. All the songs but one were written by Hynde, 32, a woman who has no patience with sermons and no time for homilies. Besides the rueful and gritty Back on the Chain Gang, the album also includes a ravishing love song, 2000 Miles; a corrosive paean to suburban gentrification, My City Was Gone; a sharp bit of blue-collar feminism, Watching the Clothes; and, perhaps best of all, Thumbelina, one of the most hard-boiled lullabies ever written. Set to a kind...
