Tinkerbell's conservative sales approach, though, is now under increasing pressure from tough new competitors. Major toy manufacturers, including Mattel, Remco, Ideal, Hasbro and Mego, have introduced broad lines of make-believe makeup. Toy and Hobby World magazine lists Remco's Crayon Children's Play Cosmetics as currently the top-selling brand. Remco also tempts the tots with Blue Ice Eye Shadow and Sweetheart Pink Lip stick. Hasbro offers a Fresh 'n Fancy kit that allows the girls to mix their own makeup colors. The prices of these play cosmetics range from $1 for a small...

...frieze's granite back, originally inscribed with the pieties of Harvard President Charles Eliot ("The white officers taking life and honor in their hands cast in their lot with men of a despised race ..."), has been reinscribed with an indignant black crayon: "Stop the genocide of the abortionist degenerates! Stop abortion holocaust! Stop capital punishment for the innocent unborn!" That in turn has been covered, like buried layers of forgotten civilizations, by orange spray paint: "John Lennon lives on forever...

Most of the sheets are very small, and the detail in some of them is carried out at an almost microscopic level-a difficult enough feat with "hard" tools like pen or silverpoint, but an impossible one (or so one would suppose) with red crayon. One of the minor technical mysteries surrounding Leonardo's work was how he made his chalk hard enough to hold a needle point when sharpened. The steadiness of his hand was almost inhuman-helped, no doubt, by the diet of fruit and water he was always recommending to others...

...drawing stands out from this group, Head of a Woman, painted in Horta de Ebro of Picasso's lover Fernande. The drawing of crayon and guache shows a discernable change from Mill at Horta, painted in the same summer, as Picasso's style evolves into an increasingly geometrical and manipulative analysis of form. In the catalog, Tinterow explains the formal changes in Picasso's art during this intensely prolific summer. Another especially rich period well-represented is that of the early 1930s. The Studio of 1933 is an intriguing work that Tinterow says is related to Picasso's cubist works...

...some little wings on that silo?" "Let's give it a try, Orville.") Actually, the space shuttle brings to mind a bloated, brick-covered DC-9, except that when "stacked" (as the space people say) on the launch pad with its enormous fuel tank and two crayon-shaped rocket boosters, it forms a surreal ensemble that could easily be passed off as the Intergalactic Hilton in a hokey sci-fi movie...
