...President sat surrounded by his health-care brain trust on July 28, his words seemed unequal to the task before him. Dr. Bob Kocher, a special assistant at the National Economic Council, was on the cream-colored brocade couch across from Obama, laying out figures that showed what a sinkhole the country's health-care system has become: the U.S. spends more to get less than just about every other industrialized country. Still, Obama and his team are aware that the more Americans learn about how Washington proposes to cure that system, the more skeptical they are about the whole...
When one thinks of Malaysia, good scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam are probably the last things that come to mind. But about 31/2 hours north of Kuala Lumpur, the niceties of an English high tea are just as much of a staple as a piping-hot satay. The Cameron Highlands, or the Camerons as locals refer to them, are dotted with tea plantations, strawberry fields, vegetable farms, villages and - as implausible as it sounds - English-style mock-Tudor hotels standing incongruously amid the jungle. A few years ago, NASA tried to resolve complaints about fish-based dishes smelling "too fishy," but their solution, thermo-stabilized swordfish in tomato sauce, tasted so bad that some astronauts refused to eat it. But despite all the setbacks and unappealing concoctions, there is still one food...
What I didn't anticipate, though, is how much I'd miss American dishes. Daily, the other three international volunteers living in my village and I engage in conversations that could only be described as one thing: food porn. Cookie dough ice cream? McDonald's cheeseburgers? Bagels with cream cheese? Felipe's burritos? You name it, we've fantasized about it. In fact, it's gotten to the point where I had a dream the other night about a chocolate shop. While we're in the city on our weekends off, us internationals hop from Western establishment to Western establishment...
