Theodore Roosevelt mounted a grand, year-long safari to East Africa, where, nearsighted as Mr. Magoo, he fired off an astonishing amount of ammunition at every species in God's creation, to be stuffed for the American Museum of Natural History. Lyndon Johnson returned to his Texas ranch to drink and smoke and grow his hair long like a hippie and wait to die. Richard Nixon did brooding penance beside the Pacific, then went back East to reinvent himself as elder statesman...

...endless cycle but as an ascent to a magnificent goal. The special significance of the year 2000 emerged from prophecies about Christ's Second Coming. By the reckoning of early Christian scholars, human history would end after 6,000 years, each thousand years corresponding to one day of creation. Some believed that there were 2,000 years between Adam and Abraham and 2,000 between Abraham and Jesus, and that after 2,000 more (constituting the Christian era) Jesus would return and reign in glory for 1,000 years--hence the millennium...

Moore believes this was "the real Mary," brought back to reality by Depakote, a mood stabilizer. Others suggest it was a ruse (successful) to win leniency...

...Foundation is, as its name implies, a foundation for promoting intercultural and race relations. We actively support discussion of alternative ways through which racial understanding at Harvard might be promoted--including the possible creation of a multicultural student center and the implementation of an ethnic studies concentration. Yet such discussion, and the political or activist measures that might be needed to convey the depth of student concern, should be viewed as building on, not replacing, the Foundation's vital role in bringing student groups together. Active participation in cultural and educational activities must accompany political activism...
