...Maybe I was expecting a bit too much from a freebie. I ramped up to Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 ($99), the best-selling burning software for PCs. It had one truly tantalizing feature. You could blend tracks into one another like a true DJ. I dreamed of making nonstop party discs without a nanosecond of silence or fade-out. Alas, this is no good if you can't preview what the transitions are going to sound like--which, 9 times out of 10, Roxio's software failed...

...Jewish joke goes, "How do you make a Romanian omelet? First, steal two eggs." Glass's programs sound as if their creator began by stealing a microphone. Other viruses are programmed to strip e-mail addresses from your address book. Back Orifice, a notorious piece of software created a few years ago by a hacking group called Cult of the Dead Cow, takes over a host computer completely. Among its privacy-invading features: it can dig up passwords and monitor every keystroke typed into...

...photographing it; they dream up--draw up--worlds we were too timid to imagine. From the early work of Walt Disney (a pen draws a cute mouse) to the computer stylings of Pixar's John Lasseter (a mouse draws a toy cowboy), a good animator is a true creator--almost the Creator--and animation is God's breath; it makes movies move. Kids knew this: their first film was often a Disney animated feature. In the dark cathedral they giggled, cried, were transported. It was a good place to learn astonishment...
