...PAPER, in some frenzied script development office, Creator could have been a good film--at least a bearable one. The idea of an eccentric scientist trying to clone his long dead wife bounces like a solid premise for a light comedy. Similarly, the tension in the film between God as reasonable and Reason as god might have been engaging, like the crunch of cold modern science and warm timelessly-fashioned love. And the acting of Peter O'Toole, who worked similar magic in The Stunt Man, should have been able to sustain the tension between the comic and philosophical elements...

...undercover for stories. The apparent model, again, is Miami Vice, but the show looks more like an '85 version of The Mod Squad. The season's biggest howler is Hollywood Beat, another Miami Vice-influenced show about a pair of undercover cops who patrol seedy Hollywood Boulevard. Creator Aaron Spelling's vision of Hollywood's "raw underbelly" features a ludicrous gallery of street folk (good-hearted prostitutes, a "cute" bag lady and a caped wacko called Captain Crusader) who could be refugees from a Walt Disney version of Freaks...

...David Bowie in his next movie looks like a wild-haired descendant of Cookie Monster and Chewbacca the wookie, well, in a manner of speaking, he is. The versatile rocker has just finished shooting Labyrinth, a $25 million gothic fantasy directed by Muppets Creator Jim Henson and overseen by Star Wars Mastermind George Lucas. Bowie, who wrote and sings a batch of new songs for the movie, plays Jareth the Goblin King, a baddie who lives at the center of a maze and turns human babies into goblins. Most of the other characters are part of a new Hensonagerie that...

...everyone is so enthusiastic about the direction Miami Vice is taking TV. "Miami Vice is a cop show--very well done and stylish, but still a cop show," says Bruce Paltrow, the executive producer of St. Elsewhere. "It's hip and glib, but not very deep." Concedes Creator Yerkovich: "In the long run you can only rely so much on color coding and Bauhaus architecture and the Versace spring catalog." Yet Vice may be revving up to move beyond such trendy props. "As soon as they get a handle on the script situation," says Yerkovich, "the show is going...
