...replies, in order of their frequency: "1) The order and majesty of the world around us, 2) There must be a Creator to explain the origin of man and the world, 3) There is proof of God in the Bible (or other church authority), 4) Past experiences in life give me faith that there is a God, 5) Believing in God gives me much comfort." The Heart Strangely Warmed. In favoring the argument based on order in the universe, Americans chart a new swing of an old pendulum. Medieval man also saw God in the order of things...
Librettist Joe Darion fairly faithfully followed the saga of archy, described by his creator, the late Columnist Don Marquis, as a sensitive cockroach who had to express himself or die. For archy, writing was even more painful than for most poets: he had to type each letter by diving headfirst from the frame of the machine to the keys (his works were all in lower case because he was unable to land simultaneously on the shift key). His bruised outpourings are mostly about mehitabel, the life-battered but life-loving cat ("toujours gai, toujours gai") who is pretty sure...

His impressionist works dazzled some critics, but failed to satisfy their creator. One day he destroyed a just-finished still life, simply because "it did not express me or express what I felt." He counted his emancipation from that day, but at the turn of the century Matisse was still trying to find his true path...
Died. George McManus, 70, creator and chronicler (in the comic strip Bringing Up Father) of the nation's most enduring (over 41 years) marital brawl; of hepatitis; in Santa Monica, Calif. McManus created the redhaired, button-nosed Jiggs and his strident, crockery-slinging wife Maggie in 1912. The pair have battled in 27 different languages across the pages of some 750 newspapers. The strip's gentle spoofing of America's rags-to-riches-to-high society dream was translated into movies and radio shows, made a millionaire of Cartoonist McManus, who was regarded by his cronies...
