Rohde and Comstock help fulfill an old Disney credo: the park is the ride. If the wait time is too long for the big attractions, you can have a blast just glomming the architecture and atmosphere. That is truest in Animal Kingdom. The backrests of park benches are carved as turtles, eagles, crocodiles. Harambe, the African "village" near the safari ride, is not idealized in Magic Kingdom fashion. It is stylized: worn, with cracked pavements below buildings of a Moorish-Disney design that might be called "mosqueteer." For visitors with an antic mind and a free year or two, Dinoland...

...credo celebrates the "Blanc et Noir" of the penguin; for the Penmaster, the coloring of this seabird potently symbolizes the noir struggle between good and evil. However, as interesting a symbolic figure as the penguin is, the Penmaster pushes the idea quite a bit further than a simple intellectual statement. He presents an annotated list of the "most evil penguins" on the planet; a "Penguin Update" for up-to-the- minute information on the penguin revolution; and a link to a "corporation" called "Penco," which offers "the best in penguin care products and penguin accessories." ...much democracy--has been achieved through the government's policy of "no victor, no vanquished." Four years ago, Renamo elected impressive numbers to the national assembly; now it has a stake in running the country, and hostilities find voice mainly as parliamentary debate. Frelimo jettisoned its socialist economic credo by 1989 and decided not only to adopt market-based capitalism but to take the bitter IMF-ordered medicine required for international investment...

...That's a credo we at TIME share, as demonstrated by another distinction we were proud to attain last week. Three of TIME's Washington journalists--bureau chief Michael Duffy and correspondents Viveca Novak and Michael Weisskopf--won the prestigious Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting for their dogged coverage of campaign-finance abuses. TIME shared the prize, awarded by Harvard University's Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, with the Seattle Times, which published a series on toxic wastes in fertilizers...
