...neighborhood church, had to be smuggled out by black colleagues and driven away lying on the backseat of a car to avoid clusters of young men positioned around intersections hurling rocks and setting fires. Photographer Roger Sandler, roaming through a newly burned-out section of the city's Crenshaw district, had the business end of a pistol suddenly thrust in his face by one of a gang of teenagers bristling with weapons. Just as he lowered his camera, certain that they would fire, they quickly jumped back into their car and drove off. Jim Willwerth was watching a group...
...latest addition to the shelf is JFK: Conspiracy of Silence (Signet; 205 pages; $4.99 paper) by Charles A. Crenshaw. It is the first account written by a doctor who was part of the Parkland Memorial Hospital trauma team that tried to save Kennedy and, two days later, his assassin (sorry, alleged assassin), Lee Harvey Oswald...
...Crenshaw says that until now, he and his colleagues refused to "rock the boat" by publicly disputing the Warren Commission's finding that Oswald was the lone assassin. When Oswald died minutes later...
...lively exemplar of the independent Charismatic movement is the 10,000- member Crenshaw Christian Center of Los Angeles, a church with no shortage of men under 40. Pastor Frederick Price preaches a much disputed "word of faith" message, which holds that God will supply anything that believers want, including health and wealth, when they truly believe. The television preacher describes his method as simply giving people "biblical information that they can apply and put into their daily lives. This is what people need, and this is what they want. They...
