...that television can carry art into the living room and be at home there without touching forelock or shuffling in embarrassment. Drama Critic Walter Kerr condensed the Dudley Fitts-Robert Fitzgerald translation without wounding it. The cast was competent at worst, and particularly fortunate in having Robert Goodier as Creon. And as should be, the hero was Oedipus. Canada's young (27) Christopher Plummer was a kingly king-handsome in bearing, condescending in modesty, impetuous in anger, regal even in his sudden descent to the living death decreed for the man who slew his father, lay with his mother...

As Creon, Claude Rains was a fine old despot, and once even squeezed out a real tear. But Rains was all but overborne by the wooden acting of Hollywood Starlet Marisa Pavan. In the title role of the girl trying to bury her brother, Italian-born Marisa was lovely to look...

Royall Tyler appropriately spits out his lines in portraying the ardent but hypocritical Polyneices. David Shillman's Theseus suffers only from unclearly articulated diction; otherwise he manages to grasp the psychological changes that Theseus undergoes during the course of the play. Amy Mims is adequate, if a bit stiff, as Antigone's sister Ismene...
