...looked poised to swallow its former parent, AT&T, in a deal that could top $15 billion. Then Procter & Gamble said it would acquire Gillette for $57 billion, forging a consumer-products giant with brands ranging from Gillette's Right Guard deodorant and Mach3 razors to P&G's Crest, Pampers and Tide...

...will bigger be better? Unlike the mates in the HP-Compaq and AOL--Time Warner deals, both partners here are marrying from positions of strength. P&G, for one, has had several recent hits, like Crest Whitestrips and Swiffer cleaning products, and Wall Street loves Lafley for increasing operating income and turbocharging the growth of brands like Iams pet food (another acquisition). Why not, say, P&G's Iams pet-food line? Median household income for Hispanics is $33,000, compared with $48,000 for the non-Hispanic population; P&G's market research found that relative to the general population, Hispanics tended to spend less on their pets...

Ammann discovered a strange skull with the dimensions of a chimpanzee's but with an odd, prominent crest like a gorilla's. Motion-detecting cameras in the forest caught what looked like immense chimpanzees, and a photograph purchased from poachers showed hunters posing with an animal estimated to be twice the size of an ordinary chimp. Ammann measured a fecal dropping three times as big as chimp dung and footprints as large as or larger than a gorilla...
