...only deprived him of an ear) shows the folly of allowing them to carry canes at all. Instead of spending their weekly allowance to start a Glee Club, the Freshmen would get more satisfaction and honor if they would subscribe their share for the maintenance of the crew. While they do not wish to compare themselves YET with the Juniors (and I agree with X' 81 that any attempt to do so would be ridiculous in the extreme), they might at least take example from the Sophomore subscription, and emulate them in this respect...

...Cornell the challenge has been taken into consideration, and the probabilities are that it will be accepted. Cornell appears to be all enthusiasm to revive a college sport for which she has so many advantages, and if the race is decided on she will probably send a formidable crew. We hope that the rowing interest will be awakened among our Freshmen, and that it will call forth the good material they undoubtedly possess. At the same time they would do well to remember the answer sent by the Columbia Freshmen, and to consider that it is their first duty...

COLUMBIA, disappointed in her hopes of a race with Harvard, has pluckily decided to send a four to England to meet the best amateur crews of Great Britain at the Henley Regatta in June. Messrs. Godwin, Sage, Colgate, Boyd, and Edson, substitute, will probably form Columbia's crew. Of these gentlemen, all but Mr. Boyd were on the eight which rowed at Springfield. A subscription ball will be given at Delmonico's on June 16 to help defray the crew's expenses. We sincerely hope that Columbia will be able to carry out her plan, and we assure...

...only means we had for raising money for our crew besides the subscription-list, namely, the boat-club theatricals, have been taken from us, and it now behooves us to find something to take their place, which the Faculty will not be apt to object to. Why can we not have such a subscription ball as Columbia is to have to aid her crew? There are men among the undergraduates who, assisted by graduates in Boston, could certainly make such a ball a grand success, financially and socially. We commend this idea to their attention. Furthermore...
