AFTER A couple more scenes--one where a thin old woman approaches a desk, peers through her thick glasses at the case worker and says in a wispy little voice, "I'm going to drop dead."--the camera finally focuses on welfare workers behind the scenes. A crewcut man with a thin tapering voice while looking at the same couple's folder, is telling a secretary, "...apparently extenuating social conditions exist." He falters and adds, "could just be a case of lousy conditions...
High marks must go to U.S. Ambassador to Cairo Hermann Eilts. A slight, crewcut, Arabic-speaking diplomat, Eilts has developed a close working relationship with Egypt's President Sadat and his Foreign Minister, Ismail Fahmy. Though he has a profound dislike of airplanes-he once drove two days from Aswan to Cairo just to avoid the one-hour flight-Eilts nonetheless made seven intercontinental trips between April 2 and last week, carrying messages between Sadat and Kissinger...
Died. Oswald G. Nelson, 68, the "Ozzie" of Ozzie and Harriet; eight months after surgery for liver cancer; in Hollywood. He cracks jokes during recesses, signs autographs, confers at ease with his tart-tongued attorney, John Wilson. Often shouting and showily unimpressed by the judge, Wilson has tried to provoke Sirica into intemperate statements. He seems intent on seeking an unfair trial so a conviction could be reversed on appeal...
...GAMBRIL is gone. Gambril who brought crewcuts and coaching genius to the IAB pool. Gambril, who pumped life into an antiquated and mediocre swimming program and transformed it into an aquatic tour de force, an invincibility, a flawlessly primed winning machine, who paced the pool deck at the IAB like an impatient and regal lion that knows that he want sand realizes that he has limited time to attain it, and brought a share of an Eastern title to Cambridge in two years, who recruited finagled, persuaded, and cajoled enough high school seniors across the country to come east...
