...Sept. 3, sea calm, weather clear, when smoke plumed from the forward deck of what in peacetime was the liner Manhattan, now the busy transport Wakefield. The 24,289-ton ship was steaming westward with about 950 passengers (civilian and Army personnel from England) and 650 crewmen. In one of the passengers' cabins a fire had started and begun to spread. The plume of smoke filled to a straight black pillar in the almost windless air, within view of all ships in the convoy. West Coast fishermen have troubles too. The sardine haul normally runs over a billion pounds a year (onefourth of the entire U.S. catch), goes into food, fish oil, fish meal and fertilizer. But this year bad weather, the loss of Jap and Italian crewmen, and Navy restrictions on when & where fishermen can fish have slashed output as much as 50%. The valuable tuna catch has also slumped, for the big fish are caught only in deep water far offshore. Fish prices have not risen as in New England. Reason: the Government is buying the entire 1942 sardine and tuna catch...

Right now each House is conducting two tennis tournaments, one for upperclassmen and one for Freshmen, and as soon as the rankings are made matches will begin. Freshman and upperclass crewmen are working out and receiving coaching at Newell Boat House in preparation for races to start in the second summer session...
