Late last Saturday morning the University crew had a hard row from the Union Boat Club to the bend below the Weld boathouse, a distance of a little over three miles. During the first mile of the course the University crew raced the second crew and was only able to win by half a length, the work of both crews being very ragged. George Pierce Metcalf, of Providence, R. I., was yesterday elected captain of the Freshman crew. Metcalf prepared for College at St. Paul's School, Concord, N. H., where he rowed for two years on the Halcyon Club crew, and last year captained the school crew, on which he rowed No. 7.
