Yesterday's call for Freshman crew candidates brought out but 51 men. This is a woefully small number, easily the smallest in a good many years, and seems to be quite out of place after the good showing of our crews last year...
Every year it is apparently necessary to revile the Freshman class for not supporting its various teams. The communication printed in another column this morning shows that only about 50 Freshmen considered it worth their while to report for the first practice of the crew, a state of affairs which is particularly hard to understand after Harvard's success in rowing last year. Last fall the football eleven lost its leader in the middle of the season, and now it is announced that illness has caused the resignation of the captain of the crew. It will be hard to fill Severance's place in the boat and it will be hard for the crew to change its captain, but if bad fortune had to come, we are glad that it came at this time. Aside from the officers of the paper, the duties of the CRIMSON editor are not great. One Sophomore or Junior is chosen each year to cover football, one to cover baseball, and one for crew. Candidates are therefore excluded from these fields. Simple assignments must be covered by members of the board during the examination periods, when no candidates are at work. They must attend board meetings at intervals to discuss questions of policy, and must sign the register in the office every day, subject to fine for neglect to do so.
