...isolation, the crime recalls a chilling campfire tale. But it appears to be anything but isolated. It may in fact be just one episode in a real-life horror movie, a cross-country killing spree that has triggered a nationwide manhunt. The police are looking for the man who may be driving that red pickup, a man who has been moving eastward, from San Diego to Minneapolis, Minn., to Chicago and now the New Jersey coast, using a series of stolen vehicles, a man who has been charged thus far with only one crime but about whom Philadelphia FBI spokeswoman...
Miglin's death shocked even the most unshockable Chicagoans. Three days after the killing, Chicago police noticed the red Cherokee less than a block from the crime scene, accruing parking tickets. They called in its license number and learned its gory history. The killer had apparently traded the Cherokee for Miglin's green Lexus, now missing. On Thursday Philadelphia police got a call from their Chicago colleagues warning that the Lexus' phone had been activated in their area. The Philadelphia police went on alert, although, as a spokesman pointed out, "the guy [in the car] does not necessarily have...
...time his coarse, grainy singing voice makes one flinch. Considering the role is one of the most coveted of all time in musical theater, how such poor casting could have occurred is difficult to understand. Another disappointment is found in Sheperd, who plays Thenardier's female partner in crime. She certainly looks as horrible as she needs to, but she lacks the pure insensitive evil that drips from her worse half. In addition, the Colonial Theater's policy of seating latecomers even after the show has started makes enjoyment of the production difficult at times...
What she has on her side is a top-notch co-author, Teresa Carpenter, who is a Pulitzer-prizewinning journalist and the author of the riveting true-crime tale Missing Beauty. So while Without a Doubt has little to offer for the history books, it is well written, sometimes moving and occasionally amusing. At one point, Judge Lance Ito is compared with Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now: "increasingly cryptic and vain." And the anecdotes about fellow prosecutor Christopher Darden reveal a sweet rapport and a complex relationship. (As for the $64,000 question, Clark writes, tough-guy style, "The question...
WASHINGTON, D.C.: As Congress prepares to renew the debate on mandatory minimum sentencing, a new study by the RAND Drug Policy Research Center says such sentences are far less effective at reducing drug use and drug-related crime than normal law enforcement and treatment programs. The reason is the high cost of incarcerating prisoners for long periods of time. According to the study, $1 million spent on conventional law enforcement, including more arrests of drug dealers, confiscations, prosecutions and standard-length prison terms, would eliminate 70 percent more crimes against people than spending the same amount on enforcing mandatory minimums...
