...High Table, the six dons chatter away while butlers in crisp which uniforms gingerly usher three routinely exquisite courses onto their plates (and this is not exaggerated): smoked salmon mousse with a dollop of caviar, prime venison steak with exotic grilled vegetables and a painstakingly hand-crafted brandy snap shell filled with fresh berries and topped with a Grand Marnier sauce. Each course is served with a choice of wines from the college cellar. Afterward, they retire to the Senior Common Room for port and coffee. And this is where our tuition fees are going...
Lieut. Sweeney, a stickler for good order and discipline, demanded a crisp salute from enlisted men. Whenever he approached a group of us, we would assign one person in the group to salute lefthanded. A thicket of arms would snap up in the regulation manner, accompanied by an enthusiastic chorus of "Good morning, SIR!" Sometimes, Lieut. Sweeney would pause after he passed us, look puzzled for a moment and then shake his head and move on. But the notion that we could have an impact on his mental health was wishful thinking...
...dessert, the finished product of the several ingredients with which I began. With its ever so thin, yet crisp, caramelized sugar top, this dessert taught me what every Harvard student should know before Commencement: the appreciation of good food is crucial to one's well-being. Ninety-eight percent of Harvard students participate in the house system. Thus, the cultivated minds that leave Harvard are often accompanied by jaded palates, palates that need nourishment and attention lest they become permanently ruined...
From the moment he described the kind gesture of little Elijah Coverdale, Hartzler and his team have held the courtroom rapt, mixing sentiment with a crisp presentation of damning evidence. When he rests his case early this week, Hartzler will be able to look back on a prosecution that has performed almost without flaw. McVeigh's friend Michael Fortier, the government's key witness, testified convincingly that McVeigh planned the bombing; the witness who says he rented McVeigh the Ryder truck used in the bombing identified him without hesitation; the technical testimony has been pithy. There have also been some...
Cartoon directors are kids at heart, and the Warner aces (Jones, Avery, Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett) were brilliant kids, all in their 20s or early 30s, when they created Porky, Daffy and Bugs. Freleng was the anchor, making crisp vaudeville comedies. Clampett bent his stories and pummeled his characters into manic, surreal, endless inventive farce; his great period (1942-46) deserves a book of its own. Jones' films were about people--all right, barnyard critters, but human withal--who endured life's vithithitudes (as Daffy would say) with amazing grace and Charlie Chaplin's physical...
