...Gospeling Psalm. The work opened with the first two verses of Psalm 108: "Urah, hanevel, v'chinor! A-irah shachar! [Awake, psaltery and harp! I will rouse the dawn!]" on a crisp accented chord in 6/4 time. A swelling chorus that any director would snap up for a Biblical movie epic passed into a hot-gospeling rendition of Psalm 100 ("Make a joyful noise unto the Lord"). Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want") was a pastoral solo sung by a boy alto till the chorus interrupted with "Why do the nations rage...

...Francisco's Grace Cathedral, Pianist Vince Guaraldi took Anglican plain chant as his starting point. The flowing Gregorian tunes were chanted by a 68-member chorus while Guaraldi improvised back of it with his trio, shifting the mood with the spirit of the prayer. "Lord, Have Mercy" is crisp and plaintive, with a syncopated Latin rhythm; the Communion anthem is a waltzlike blues with a flowing melodic line. The "Theme for Grace" at the Offertory, with a chorus crooning the syllables of "hallelujah," reminded some listeners of mood-setting supper music. "That's the idea," says Episcopal Father...

...strapping, hamhanded man with slicked-back hair and brooding mustache, Michelangeli ambled onstage with the baleful nonchalance of a boxer bent on mayhem. Once he settled at the keyboard, his touch was featherweight light, his attack crisp and restrained through Debussy's liquid Images and Beethoven's soaring Sonata in C Major (Opus 2, No. 3). After two encores and a dozen curtain calls, he unconcernedly ambled offstage to a standing ovation. Typically, following his triumph, he repaired last week to the regenerative quietude of a month-long teaching engagement at Siena's Accademia Musicale Chigiana. Untypically...

Troubled & Sad. Crisp reminders of everyday reality shocked and estranged his 16th century public; he even got fired midway through work on frescoes for the duomo in Cremona. Today his inventive if taciturn brilliance is earning him increasing admiration. He is recognized more and more as a man of his time, for his canvases, above all, are a commingling of the shifting manners then stirring in the art world...

BEETHOVEN: QUARTET IN A MINOR OPUS 132 (RCA Victor). This intricate work was written 25 years after the septet and sounds a world apart, especially in this crisp, exact performance by the Juilliard String Quartet. Technically, the Juilliard is superb; the pianissimo passages, for example, are feather-light and still warm, but the third movement, the "song of thanksgiving offered to the divinity by a convalescent," sounds curiously reserved...
