...last of the World War I poets, and the title poem of Over the Brazier (1916), his first book of verse, foresaw the Lost Generation: "What life to lead and where to go/ After the War, after the War?" Critics in the early 1920s classed and anthologized Graves as a Georgian poet. In the late 1920s, his close analysis of a Shakespeare sonnet impressed Critic William Empson and led, indirectly, to the textual scrutinies of the New Criticism of the 1940s...
Avedon's ambition is to be, like Goya, both the royal chronicler and the social critic. But unflattering shots of the glamorous and privileged are one thing. How to cast that incinerating gaze upon ordinary people? Not one to swaddle his Western subjects in the gentle conventions of "concerned photography," he has persisted in his relentless inspection of bad skin, weak chins and glassy-eyed expressions. He also has resorted in places to cliched potshots, as in one picture of a nine-year-old cradling a gun. Yet he has given most of the people in these pictures ample means...

Among his most controversial works...

The Aquinos' comfortable life in a middle-class Manila suburb was severely disrupted in 1972 when Marcos jailed Ninoy, his most outspoken critic. After Ninoy was released for medical reasons in 1980, the couple moved to Boston, where they lived for three years before Ninoy decided that he must return home to unite the anti-Marcos forces...
...does the reader fit into this complex structure of interwoven times and multiple voices? "Terra Nostra," for example, has often been considered unreadable by critics. Yet Fuentes emphasizes that in spite of its difficulty, it is a novel which does not go unread. "The Death of Artemio Cruz" and "Where the Air is Clear" were both considered extremely difficult and complicated when they first appeared. Fuentes tells of one critic who suggested that "The Death of Artemio Cruz" served no better purpose than to be flushed down the drain. "Today," Fuentes says, "these novels are read by 15 year-olds...
