...blend of Jolie's previous adventuress roles: the CIA killer lady in Mr. & Mrs. Smith crossed with a mix of Lara Croft, the daredevil pilot from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and the witch-goddess of Beowulf. (Oh, and her Tigress in Kung Fu Panda.) Densely tattooed, richly skilled in the automotive and firearm arts, Jolie's Fox reeks of a take-charge sexiness we might call feminismo. When, to make a point, she kisses Wesley in front of his perfidious girlfriend, you can almost hear the curling of toes of every comic-book guy in the audience...
...time is the learned ability to push buttons rapidly while swearing and forgetting to bathe. And even a state school Communications major can recognize the picture of the scantily clad woman on the front cover for the miserable escapist fantasy that it is: that’s no Lara Croft knockoff, that’s the digital version of the cheerleader that broke Mr. Dibbell’s heart in 10th grade. Other paintings include cameos by Super Mario Brothers, Lara Croft, the Road Runner, the General Electric logo and a giant Nike sneaker...
...Despite a range of photographic practice, from photojournalism to portraiture, curator Crombie brings together a remarkably coherent vision. Haunting the show are spectral presences, from the dapperly besuited Aboriginal gent of the '50s that Brenda L. Croft retrieved from her late father's shoebox of slides, and Darren Siwes' ghostly self-portrait projected onto a Henson-like night-time landscape, to vacated urban spaces in which we are left to trace subtle signs of life-whether it be in a ray of sunlight retreating from Annie Hogan's Brisbane rental house, or the silvery spray of Scott Redford's Gold...
