Her scenes with her "little flock," most of whom number among Richard and Jenny's neighbors, manage to straddle the opposing tendencies in the play. Added to Richard's amazed discovery of the thousands of dollars his wife has stashed away, she is faced with the fact that the slightly surreal is usually more effective than the sermon...

Their relationship, on the skids before the film begins, collapses utterly when George learns that she is to be written out of the program. The bearer of the sad tidings is a venomous BBC executive, Mercy Croft (Coral Browne), who doesn't give Childie a second look-she is too busy with the first. As with George, deception is the key to character. Childie belies her name-she has abandoned the illegitimate child she bore at 15 and is now herself a slow 32 years...

Ulcer patients have long been known to be susceptible to internal bleeding after taking aspirin, but this was assumed to result from what was, in effect, an overdose only for their sensitive stomachs. Not necessarily, two researchers now report in the British Medical Journal. Dr. Desmond Croft and Dr. Philip H. N. Wood gave ordinary doses-the equivalent of twelve aspirins a day for one to four weeks-to 226 people who had no ulcers or any other "stomach trouble." All but nine suffered at least minor bleeding from their stomach walls into the intestines...
Sister George is in a vicious swivet because her role is to be edited out of the show. Mrs. Mercy Croft (Lally Bowers), a BBC program manager, comes bearing the unmerciful news: a ten-ton truck will collide with Sister George's motor bike, and the entire country town will go into mourning at the loss of their beloved nurse...
...Croft is a kind of moral guardian of the radio show, seeing that nothing in the script offends the proprieties, ethics and decencies of the English home. She looks like a displaced manikin and speaks in tones of liquefied arsenic. Her fraud is that she, too, is a lesbian and has no scruples about luring Childie into ditching Sister George and becoming her private secretary. All she leaves Sister George is an offer to play the part of Clarabelle the Cow in a retch-inspiring kiddie show. At play's end, Sister George sits alone mooing through drunken tears...
