...Kiss of the Spider Woman. Better than the movie, bolder than the book, this brassy musical centers on a homosexual flirtation in an Argentine prison. Scenes of torture crosscut to film fantasies with hunks and feathers. Comebacks for star Chita Rivera, director Harold Prince, composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb, plus a stellar debut for Brent Carver in a show asserting there can be no freedom without sexual freedom...
...gotta do. Arduousness follows, an endless subverbal sequence in which the hero trains in the vast primitive fastness of the Soviet wilderness, with only his own fighting spirit to sustain him as he chops wood, lifts rocks and runs up the highest mountain for a socko finish. Crosscut with this lonely ordeal are shots of Drago, who has an entire collective of helpers and all the latest electronic and chemical gizmos working on his muscle tone...
...shows, Kingpin has attitude and edge. Those are easy. What it doesn't have is a fresh voice and fleshed-out characters who surprise you. Kingpin knows its pop history: it often recalls Traffic and larcenously mimics The Godfather's conclusion, as Miguel's visit to a church is crosscut with scenes of his rivals being rubbed out. The Sopranos uses Mob cliches too, but it overlays them with a suburban family drama; Kingpin does nothing to improve on its Mob-movie forebears, nor does it have the subtlety or layers of The Sopranos. (These might be unfair comparisons...
...Expertly crosscut with Wade's life is a series of chapters called "Evidence" into which O'Brien throws psychological theories, passages of presidential biography, even accounts of battlefront atrocities in 1776. Here are quotations from Dostoyevsky and George Sand; selections from The Magician's Handbook and the Nuremberg Principles; an item about the 30,000 people who go missing every year. Thus, for example, as we travel deeper into Wade's battlefront memories, we are also given hard-and-fast, nonfiction testimony from the men who perpetrated the My Lai massacre. The "Evidence" chapters broaden the book's focus...
...whom constant homages are paid, Constantin Brancusi. Of all 20th century sculptors, Brancusi did the most to combine a reductive, Modernist sensibility with the language and techniques of vernacular carpentry. There are echoes of the great Romanian right through this show, from the roughly notched beam like a huge crosscut-saw blade in Some Tales, 1975-77, to the somber egglike or coffin- shaped forms of Maroon, 1987-88, or Lever...
