Octopus opens with a slapstick scene in New York City's Palace restaurant. A Sicilian Mafioso is trying to pass off stolen "Tiepido" and "Van Go" paintings and "Stradinoff" violins to an undercover agent with a recorder sewn into the crotch of his shorts. It was 1977, and the detective didn't know that he was talking to a key player in a drug network newly launched by the Sicilians...
...like Marcel Duchamp and other artists in the avant- garde circle that formed around the collectors Louise and Walter Arensberg, took a special delight in sowing his work with sexual hints. Still the jokes are not so provincial that only Red Sox die-hards can be heard laughing. The fact that the play is about the Boston club bears little significance in the story...
...androgyny, female-female bonding, and patriarchally defined syntax. But when I took an informal poll in a room full of guys the other day--"What do you think of when you hear the word `feminist'?"--the first response was, "Holly Near aiming a pair of pruning shears at my crotch...
