...Crimson has already stated its belief that the College's disciplining of protesters involved in these incidents--via the long-dormant Committee on Rights and Responsibilities (CRR)--is abhorrent because the CRR is used only to prosecute political activists. Unfortunately, the law school's handling of the same two incidents seems even more outrageous. The Law School Ad Board has acted as prosecutor, judge and jury for its students; it has selectively prosecuted those it believes to be political activists; it has unfairly penalized a student's future job prospects instead of the student himself; and it has unfairly forced...

...past few days the Conservative Club has been outraged by the sympathetic treatment given by the Committee on Rights and Responsibilities to those students who attacked, intimidated, and harrassed South African diplomat Abe S. Hoppenstein at Lowell House last spring. ...open hearing and to have legal counsel present at hearings. Under current procedures, whether or not hearings are held fairly or with repect for due process, there is no way to guarantee that they will be, because they take place behind closed doors. By holding hearings in secret, the CRR invites charges of impropriety or unfairness and gives the Harvard community little reason to have faith in the fairness of its proceedings...

...them a fair hearing. Moreover, it would demonstrate the University's interest in fairness to the community as a whole and would give the public an opportunity to learn the circumstances surrounding controversial events. Such was the admirable but unrealized intent of Dean Spence's original directive to the CRR...
