...such a "farce."Though Konrad Adenauer had been elected Chancellor again and again, Khrushchev seemed to think that he was still the "most unpopular man in Germany." His successor would soon enough have to reckon with the power of Soviet missiles. Elsewhere in Gallery XVII is a wall of three Soutines, a Modigliani and an unusual Toulouse-Lautrec. Of the Soutines, the Gorge du Loup is least noteworthy: I find most Soutine landscapes pretty dreary matters and this essay in murky tones and crude distortions is no exception to the rule. Now with Superior, it gets big production in Venezuela's rich Maracaibo field, crude-oil reserves of well over 300 million bbl., plus excellent drilling prospects in Texas and Louisiana...
...Bibbia soon encountered more trials than Job. The Italian Rabbinical Council denounced La Bibbia as "sacrilege"; Milan's Roman Catholic Cardinal Montini withdrew the nihil obstat of the church. Sales slumped, and ugly rumors grew that Vignal's crew of actors, who posed for the crude Biblical scenes, lived private lives of less than Biblical probity...
