Died. Louis C. Breguet, 75, French airplane manufacturer who in 1908, less than five years after the Wright Brothers' flight at Kitty Hawk, constructed and ascended in a crude apparatus that he called a gyroplane, a forerunner of the helicopter; of a heart attack; in Paris. A topflight builder of World War I military aircraft, Breguet was once scoffed at for predicting that airplanes would fly at 650 m.p.h...
Although imports will rise less than gross national product, they will reach $11 billion in 1960, a 26% gain during the decade. Biggest gainers will be bauxite (up 97.5%), crude oil (up 103%) and iron ore (up 300%). Biggest losers: tin (down 5%), wool (down 10%). Assuming that foreign aid ends, exports will edge up only 1%, but they will all be paid for. U.S. capital outflow will have doubled...
Help from the South. The Milan fair was an accurate reflection of Italy's growing boom. Gross national product jumped by 5% last, year, even though drought lopped 2 billion tons from the normal 9 billion ton wheat harvest; industrial production was up nearly 10%. Crude-steel production topped 4,000,000 tons and auto production increased to 215,000 cars and trucks, both alltime records. An important new oilfield has been tapped on the Adriatic coast, while Sicily's Ragusa field (TIME, Jan. 25, 1954) has four producing wells, with a fifth...

Composition is perhaps his strong point: like most of his canvases. Hultberg's Airport (see cut) looks elaborate as a house of cards, yet solid as a concrete runway...
Made in Australia for a mere $1,000,000, Long John Silver is a pretty crude imitation, as economy cruises are apt to be, of the de luxe $1,650,000 made-in-England original, Walt Disney's Treasure Island (TIME, July 24, 1950). On deck once again is the cutthroat pirate crew, the boy in the apple barrel (Kit Taylor this time), the mutiny, the mad castaway, the attack on the fort-even the same rented parrot, or its Aunt Polly. Luckily, there is also the same actor to play Long John Silver: Robert Newton...
