...really as addictive as gambling, there must be a 12-step program somewhere to treat it. Sure enough, a Web search turns up an e-mail recovery program created back in 1997 by a pair of Florida State University administrators, Perry Crowell and Larry Conrad. It's pretty crude, Crowell admits, and because it was written before the explosion in users, traffic and e-mail viruses, it seems almost naive. "If we were to update it today, we might very well declare defeat," says Crowell...
...Fast and crude, Rall's drawing style perfectly matches the urgency and tone of the book. Boxy, flat characters with both eyes on the sides of their head inhabit environs with only the barest of detail. The cartoons function strictly as a way to efficiently set the place and action. As a result the fifty-pages-long comic in the middle of the book makes much of the prose chapters redundant. It does seem like the speediness of this book's appearance comes at the price of cohesiveness...
...acclaim of Griffith's masterwork made his virulent, derisive depiction of blacks all the more toxic - indeed, potentially epidemic. This was not simply a racist film; it was one whose brilliant storytelling technique lent plausibility and poignancy to images of crude Negroes in the Reconstruction Senate, and of a black man pursuing a white woman until, to save her virginity, she throws herself off a cliff. Viewers could believe that what they saw was not only historically but emotionally true. "Birth" not only taught moviegoers how to react to film narrative but what to think about blacks...
...exporters are interested in stability. They don't want to shrink their own markets." The Saudis could conceivably decide that they would no longer use their excess capacity--as they do now--to smooth out market volatilities. Partly because of uncertainty as to Saudi intentions, the benchmark price of crude oil rose 34%, to $26.64 per bbl., from February to late April. Still, it remains far below its average price in 2000. (Crude oil today is, in real terms, barely half the price it was at the time of the first oil shock...
...said right off that, in America at least, Richter was easy to miss. Think the words "new German art," and you think "neo-Expressionism." Think that, and the heart sinks. Heftige malerei, the German critics used to call it, "heavyweight painting," and it was certainly crude enough for three drunken gnomes and a village woodcutter. Inch-thick paint (the stuff that used to mean "sincerity" in the 1980s, remember?) and sculptures mutilated from tree roots with chain saws. All this rhetoric, now so comic, had its equivalents in the States (think of Julian Schnabel and his pretensions), but Germany...
