Washington's own Cuba time warp got a jolt as well. The oil discovery has renewed debate over whether a crude-thirsty U.S. should loosen its 46-year-old trade embargo against Cuba and let yanqui firms join the drilling, which is taking place fewer than 100 miles off U.S. shores. Despite the Bush Administration's hard line on Cuba, Republicans in Congress have proposed legislation to exempt Big Oil from the embargo. That clamor is sure to rise - especially if Barack Obama, who is more open to dialogue with Havana, becomes the next President - now that Cuba's state...

...given Iran - OPEC's second-biggest oil producer - a cushion to neutralize the impact of Western sanctions over its nuclear program, and to ameliorate the effect of a struggling economy. But because Iran imports crucial refined diesel to keep its cars and factories running, it needs to sell its crude oil for $60 a barrel or more, according to oil analysts. So, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has plenty of incentive to push his OPEC colleagues to vote for production cuts: If falling prices force his government to cut its heavy gasoline subsidies, he won't help his chances of reelection...

...current financial crisis is the result of house owners who defaulted on their bond repayments. The obvious reason for this is flatly ignored. The sharp increase in crude-oil prices shortly before the financial crises sucked cash directly from the pockets of the consumers, which then forced them to default on their bond payments. Strong action is taken against cartels in business worldwide, but not against OPEC. It seems to be untouchable. The OPEC members are probably using all the cash sucked from the consumers to buy up stocks of companies in the industrialized world at half price. Unless...

...second desirable quality of leadership, especially now, is toxic even to mention for its allegedly élitist overtones: intelligence. Not necessarily anything as crude as raw IQ scores, though something closer to that than to the kind of mystical wisdom attributed to Ronald Reagan. Call it intellectual curiosity, perhaps, or a willingness to engage with complicated ideas. This financial crisis is extremely complicated. Surely the best and the brightest can screw up, as they famously did in Vietnam. But four decades later (and after eight years of George W. Bush), maybe we can agree that on balance it would...

...which feels so light and cushy on the sinuses and allows for hardcore REM action (and for women, protection from make-up smudge during a cat nap). The design blocks out every stray photon of light, and the silky head-strap won't give you any rude awakenings or crude indentations. If you want to spice things up, try the Dream Essence mask, which has a pocket that comes with a sachet filled with lavender and chamomile; it almost made me topple like Dorothy in a field of poppies. After a while I wasn't down with the smell...
