...language, and idea. The drama takes place in the Old Southwest--an informal trial is set up to bring truth to light in what turns out to be a sensitive, almost unearthly love of brother for sister. Their rapturous relationship was doomed; the sister has been killed by the cruder man whom she married but to whom she had never given herself. At the trial of truth, the boy, his Conquistador parents, and the husband declare themselves before a quiet, frozen chorus of townspeople, baring themselves in extraordinary speeches that are nearly soliloquies...
...criminals−reciprocate by settling their private differences in an equally quiet way, with razor blades half-buried in potatoes or the point of a razor-sharp shiv. Last week London's sensational penny press was black with scare headlines suggesting that gang warfare of a cruder type had come to The Smoke. Four men had pulled up in a car before a dingy boarding house in Maida Vale, crossed the sidewalk in broad daylight, entered the house and pumped lead into a sleazy race-track gambler. James Robertson Justice, who practically carried Doctor in the House as a gruff but good-hearted surgeon, now becomes an apopleptic ship-captain, and loses some of his charm. Similarly, devil-may-care medical school comrades are supplanted by an equally devil-may-care but less interesting ship's crew. They provide a slightly flimsy background for the doctor, Dirk Bogarde...
...flint-edged sickles, no pottery, no decorative work of any kind. All these items were plentiful in the next-oldest village (Jarmo) that the Chicago diggers found in 1948. 100 miles from M'lefaat. So the people who lived in the pit houses must have been much cruder than the neighboring Jarmo people, who are believed to have founded their village 7,000 years...
