...such, it has been handy for the "oil shocks" of the 1970s. When OPEC raised the price of oil in 1973, the result was economic stagnation for the developed Western countries. But Third World nations faced a crueler world. They, too, were dependent on petroleum. Not only did their economic infrastructure depend on it, but many of their people had begun using refined products--like kerosene--for cooking and heating. When the price of oil rose, therefore, the Third World could not cut down on its consumption. At the same time, it lacked the money to pay the higher prices...
...condescension of the Salvation Army sermons, Bill's amorality, Lil's sexuality--these elements of Feingold's adaptation should have been emphasized in the production. The Brecht and Weill characters, as revealed in their songs, are not the cute bumblers of Jones' production. The two paint a much crueler, darker world, a world in which the little guys squander their energies fighting each other instead of their common exploiter. Hanoi charged that Cambodia's Khmer Rouge guerrillas had made incursions into Viet Nam and had looted and sacked its pagodas, schools and hospitals. Far worse, it accused the guerrillas of "raping, tearing fetuses from mothers' wombs, disemboweling adults and burning children alive." Were it not for the fact that thousands...
...central relationship in the play is a vaguely sexual one between the strong, cruel father. Marcus, and his even stronger, even crueler daughter, Regina--who twenty years later will have taken over his role as the major destructive force in the family. Perhaps Hellman was thinking of her own close relationship with her father--it's easy to get Freudian here--whom she knew to be unfaithful to her mother, a fact which may have repelled her and attracted her at the same time. But a more obvious parallel to the Regina-Marcus affair would be the relationship Hellman...
