...linchpin of the Navy's surface fleet is the high-priced ($1 billion apiece) Aegis cruiser, which Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger has called the "most advanced air-defense system in the world today." Named after the mythical shield of Zeus, Aegis cruisers like the Ticonderoga and Yorktown bristle with radars and weaponry capable of tracking and attacking 18 incoming missiles at a time. The Aegis radar is linked to a computerized fire-control system for the ship's antiaircraft guns, depth charges and rocket-launched torpedoes. Just seven of these advanced vessels are in service, but another...
Along with the police and ourselves, the detached observers on Bourbon Street that night were the officers and men of the visiting French Navy cruiser Jeanne d'Arc, in the Quarter on liberty. We passed them in order of rank: first groups and pairs of enlisted men, wearing bell bottoms and curiously feminine white blouses with deep square necks and blue piping, and berets with fluffy red pompoms. Moses impassively translated...

It is lovely in the hills. They look somewhat like the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. Part of their beauty is their pristine remoteness. One rarely encounters a white man there...
...Meru, the Land Cruiser glides through the lion-colored grasses. It is late afternoon, and lions everywhere are rising from their long day's slumber to think about hunting. The driver, a Masai named Simeon K. Londaga, sees the lion and stops and points. Poking his head like a periscope through the roof of the Cruiser, the visitor follows the line of Simeon's finger and gets lost out there in the grasses. He squints as if dialing the eyes to better focus, as if trying to build the platonic lion out of grass. Still the lion will not come...
