Last January a British battle squadron was plowing in double column in maneuvers off the coast of Spain. On the yardarm of the flagship, the enormous battle cruiser Hood, appeared a flag signal for the squadron to form single line of battle. H. M. S. Renown, leading the second column, swung sharply inward. The Hood continued stubbornly on her course. Amid warning siren hoots, the two ships crashed together. No one was injured but Renown limped to Gibraltar for temporary repairs. The heavier Hood suffered $40,000 damages. Who was to blame...
...questions were: 1) Had he given proper and sufficient signals for the maneuver? 2) Was there sufficient space for the ships to maneuver in safety? Admiral Bailey's defender in court (known officially as "the Prisoner's Friend") was his immediate predecessor in command of the Battle Cruiser Squadron, Vice Admiral William Milburne James, grandson of the late great painter Sir John Everett Millais and known to all the British Navy as "Bubbles...
...While Douglas & Richard drove out two of the seven cars in the garage, a Negro servant crawled through a window to rescue a Scotch terrier they had left upstairs. Off H. M. S. London stepped none other than Rear Admiral John Knowles Im Thurn, sometime commander of H. M. S. Hood ("World's Most Powerful Battle Cruiser...
Boats. Unlike automobiles, motor boats ordinarily change little in appearance from year to year. Visitors to last week's show, however, noticed that streamlining had been applied to cruiser construction. Mechanical revelations were less revolutionary. Outboard motors this year will have electric starters. Smallest outboard in the show was a 24½-lb. Evinrude-Elto with 1½ h.p. ($55). Principal development in larger motors was V-drive construction, with motors mounted at the extreme stern to make more cabin or cockpit room. Interesting to many were three silent electric boats for anglers, 15-to-18 ft. long. Speed...
