...ninth grade, I had a crush on my high school's entire senior class. The seniors I knew were so much that I was not--tall, cool, college-bound, unconcerned with the tormenting intricacies of my school's social geography. In my wide eyes they looked like heroes. But when I became a senior myself I smiled at my youthful enthusiasm. From the top of the mountain that had seemed so towering from below, the view was the same as ever...

...least, NASDAQ isn't rolling out the welcome mat for most dotcoms, and high-flying Internet IPOs are practically a distant memory. Like his fellow VC wannabes, from buyout king Henry Kravis to anonymous Florida retirees, Newman isn't about to let a little thing like a bear market crush his dreams of jump-starting the next Yahoo and riding it to the bank. Never mind that the vast majority of VC bets have failed or that inexperienced players may have a tough time picking winners in a choppy market...

Trial lawyers, rejoice. The Supreme Court, in a rare, pro-litigation sort of mood, has cleared the way for a new crush of bias lawsuits pitting employee against employer. Monday, the Justices ruled unanimously that employees can file job-discrimination suits against employers without presenting any hard evidence that the employer in question intended to break the law. Once upon a time, of course, employees who wanted to sue employers for discriminatory practices were obliged to dredge up proof of their bosses' illegal motivation (say, to fire on the basis of age, race or gender) - a litmus test that often...
