...quibbling already, I'm getting ahead of myself. I acquired my iPhone shortly after 6:00 on launch day at the Apple store in midtown Manhattan, a subterranean emporium located underneath the plaza in front of FAO Schwartz and accessible through a crystal portal leading to a spiral staircase, befitting the fairy-tale mood. The crowd was astounding, hundreds of people (granted, many of them were TV crews) gawking and yelling and cheering the first customers to emerge with their iPhones. In a way it's disturbing to watch America fall in love with a piece of technology again...

Back home in Paris a week later, Kouchner paces restlessly around his Quai d'Orsay office - "this golden cage," as he calls it - on the Left Bank, with its crystal chandeliers and priceless tapestries. He circles his desk, bemoaning economic injustices, political paralysis and U.S. missteps in Iraq, and outlining his goals to Time. These include a peaceful transition to independence in Kosovo, multiparty talks in Lebanon, an "honest broker" role for France between the U.S. and Iran, and some relief for Africa's refugees. Everyone in California, including the courts, is frustrated because they want to see things happen faster than they have been. But this is not a sprint; it is a marathon. The department of corrections has been promising reform for years and hasn't been able to deliver. So, there is a real possibility that there will be a court-ordered cap on the prison population in the state...

Libeskind's $135 million addition to the ROM, called the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal after its lead donor, is resolutely unlike anything Toronto - or most cities - has seen before. To begin with, it doesn't look much like the original building, which is actually two buildings: a yellow brick structure from 1912 that was overtaken in 1932 by a weighty limestone addition in a Beaux Arts style with trace elements of the Gothic and Baroque. Libeskind's Crystal bursts from the old museum's limestone in pointed shards of anodized aluminum. It touches the ground with the jagged footprint...
