...anyone who has seen The Lion King knows, Hakuna Matata means "no worries," but on this July afternoon in Minneapolis, Minn., director Julie Taymor has plenty of them. She is in rehearsals for her new stage version of Disney's animated film about Simba the lion cub and his struggle to take his rightful place as king of beasts. Her long, dark hair pulled back and an intense expression on her face, Taymor is trying to work out some kinks in the Hakuna Matata number, which ends the first act. ...look for this plot in Bulfinch. It's a shaggy-gods story with the requisite Disney theme of adolescent self-discovery: a cub becomes a lion; a mermaid becomes a maid; a geek kid becomes a Greek god. Hercules (voiced by Tate Donovan) is your basic mythic hybrid--half man, half deity--recast as a clumsy teen. ...first characters to appear onstage are a pair of copulating jaguars--or, rather, a pair of copulating life-size puppet jaguars manipulated by people hidden in the stage blackness. The animals produce a cub, which later turns into a human child--which still later changes from a puppet into a real live boy. Oversize masks hide most of the remaining actors, from the stern-faced schoolteacher with his crooked, elongated finger to a snarling, flamenco-dancing tiger tamer. Butterflies float across the stage, a miniature church breaks apart when leaves erupt from inside it, and a dancing skeleton...

...baby into a plastic bag and hurling it into a dumpster. She may have been modeling herself after the parents of another privileged teenager who provided their son Alex Kelly with a life of European ease after he was accused of rape. Surely a lion must protect her cub, but there's a point when instinct must give way to morality...
