...lovers' talk is smart, witty and direct -- an eavesdropper's fantasy. The posterotic mood is sophisticated; the mature pair give each other plenty of latitude and genuine affection. There are other voices in other rooms: a Czech woman and her husband, who accuses Philip of making him a cuckold. More confusion and explanations...
...characters of the picnicking gods are set forth as explicitly as in a Roman pantomime, and one can easily see why Giulio had such an influence on Rubens and Poussin. Lusting, half-tipsy, bare bottomed and prone to fits of hilarity and rage, Giulio's Olympians cavort and cuckold one another across the walls to the accompaniment of all manner of phallic puns. When sword-brandishing Mars is seen pursuing Adonis, whom he has just caught in flagrante with his wife Venus, even the antique statues in the background display their truncated arms as a sign of impending castration...
...E.T.A. Hoffmann left incomplete at the time of his death in 1822. From his position in Limbo, the composer Hoffmann cheers this decision and vows to pay close attention to everything that follows...

It also helped her finally convince Joyce to agree to marry her, 27 years after they first ran away together...
This colorful crew is self-satirizing. Any moralizing comment on their behavior would be superfluous. As for the central triangle (a cad, a cuckold and a tin-hearted tart deluded into thinking she has at last found a grand passion), it is too banal to awaken much emotion. Nor is there any point in using these figures from a remote society for social criticism. No, Radford has done the right thing with his material by observing the exaggerated tonalities of glamour-trash fiction. As a result, White Mischief plays as something a lot of people claim to have been missing...
