Tharon Musser has provided lovely lambent lighting, though its technical execution is distractingly jerky. At one point, taking a cue from Titania's words--"The moon methinks looks with a wat'ry eye;/ And when she weeps, weeps every little flower"--she has all the pendent vegetation come alive with tiny lachrymal lights, while the fairies march out carrying hand torches. A beautiful way to end the show's first half...
...kind of tedious scene that would strain the nerves of the most seasoned actors. But Ben, star of the forthcoming CBS-TV series, Gentle Ben, fended off the attack of a Bengal tiger with almost playful aplomb, breezed through the retakes without missing a cue. Congratulated by Producer George Sherman, Ben merely grunted and slurped down a can of sardines-just as any 7ft.-long, 650-lb. black bear would do after a hard day on the set. Says Sherman: "You look at the script and say 'a bear can't do those things...
...Tuchman concluded with what sounded remarkably like a Middle Eastern version of the "domino theory" that is so derisively scorned by Administration critics when applied to Asia. "If we fail to act to confirm the principle of freedom of navigation, every person in every one of these countries will take note...
Secretary General U Thant somehow missed the cue. He could have won time and allowed tempers to cool by stalling on the removal or referring the Egyptian request to the Security Council. Instead, to almost everyone's astonishment, he used narrowly legal reasoning to order the U.N. troops pulled out -without even consulting the Security Council or the seven nations that contribute to the peace-keeping force. With that action, which was met with incredulity and dismay in Western capitals, Thant and the U.N. just about forfeited any effective peace-keeping role. Nasser himself may have been surprised...
When, as sometimes happens, a stranger comes to Uncle's, the boys will try and hustle him. The technique is to surround him, give him a cue (if he's not careful he plays a ball without noticing there is no tip on the stick), and then bully, beg, and flatter him into playing for half dollars. The kids are not particularly good at hustling or pool. Many of the old men in overcoats who lounge all day along Hanover Street or Salem Street could run the table on the best of them. As for hustling, hustling is a subtle...
