...known to cause cancer in a wide range of animals, from mice to chickens. In the early 1980s, Dr. Robert Gallo and his co-workers, as well as a group of Japanese researchers, showed for the first time that a retrovirus is responsible for cancer in humans. The culprit is now called human T-cell lymphotropic virus, type 1 (HTLV-1), which causes a rare and extremely aggressive adult leukemia that occurs mainly in the southern islands of Japan and parts of Central Africa and the Caribbean...
...culprit has not yet explained his motives. College officials, however, have several hypotheses. "It was a wonderful, big pumpkin, and a challenge. Swarthmore students are always up for a challenge," Dickerson said, adding, "he hasn't given me any real insight into whether he needed the pumpkin or if he wanted to make...
...nabbed by a combination of space-age sleuthing and old-fashioned legwork. Executives at HBO, the Time Inc.-owned cable service, say that within 24 hours after the incident they were confident there was enough information to eventually locate the culprit. But it was up to the FCC to track him down through an elaborate process of elimination. To override HBO's signal, it was determined, the intruder must have had access to a large dish -- at least seven meters in diameter -- equipped with a strong transmitter. That limited the number of possible sources to about 580 commercial "uplink" facilities...

Exactly one week before Captain Midnight's attack, the service's programming had been interrupted briefly with a pattern of color bars. It was apparently the work of the same person; thus it seemed the culprit had access to the facility at the same time on both nights. Another important tip came from an accountant vacationing in Florida who had overheard a revealing conversation about Captain Midnight at a pay phone. He took down the caller's license-plate number and gave it to the authorities...
Clearly the main culprit in the battle for an open decision making process at this University is the administration itself. It condescendingly views student protest as a kind of quaint extracurricular activity which doesn't affect the University. It even tries to squelch participation in its affairs by tampering with elections by its own alumni, as it did this year in the annual vote for the Board of Overseers. (The Board is a 30-member alumni body which technically oversees all decisions by the policy-making Harvard Corporation...
