Leading opponents of the two reactors include Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, whose state includes several communities within Seabrook's 10-mile emergency planning zone, and New York Gov. Mario Cuomo. Both have withheld the requisite guarantees of emergency assistance on ground that no evacuation plan could adequately protect the public in the congested resort areas...
Since then things have obviously got no better for the Democrats. One of the party's greatest problems has been the absence from the race of some of the best potential vote getters: Bill Bradley, Mario Cuomo and Sam Nunn. Last week these noncandidates were joined by another refusenik: Colorado Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, who had been vigorously testing the waters since June, announced in Denver that she would not plunge in officially. Her only contribution to the political dialectic was a 15-second commercial in which she boasts, "I have a lot to say. But 15 seconds...
...These symptoms of ambivalence explain why one-third of possible Democratic voters say they would like to see another candidate in the race. When this group is asked who that candidate should be, 25% say Senator Edward Kennedy, another 25% say Hart and 19% mention New York Governor Mario Cuomo...
