Last month, New York became ht 18th state to impose major restrictions on surrogate parenthood. Fearing that current surrogacy practices amounted to a baby-selling business, Gov. Mario M. Cuomo passed a law that prohibited the adoptive parents from paying the surrogate mother. The law also denied legal validity to the contract traditionally signed by both parties...
...them, that is. Jesse Jackson, who had to be wrestled into line at the 1988 convention, where he controlled 30% of the delegates, came to this one with just his (considerable) powers of speech -- which he couldn't exercise until he reluctantly agreed to endorse the Clinton ticket. Mario Cuomo, who for months had sniped at Clinton from the sidelines, preached some old-time Democratic religion while blessing a ticket with postliberal views on welfare (too generous) and government spending (ditto). ...York Governor Mario Cuomo has also had his past differences with Clinton, causing some to worry that his nominating speech might lack his customary fervor. You know that's their whole deal -- it's a bunch of bull...
...assure that no such perception takes hold, Clinton has already done much. He has striven mightily to calm the Democrats' traditional battles: crafty negotiating has held platform fights to a minimum; a fair amount of begging secured Mario Cuomo's participation as nominator; and -- no small matter -- Clinton's handling of Jesse Jackson, while dampening minority enthusiasm (at least for now), has undoubtedly aided his desire to reach for the center, which, after all, is where the votes are. But there is more to do. A harmonious conclave can leave fat cats smiling and help dent the campaign...
